George’s path to data science was so bizarre that Towards Data Science featured him in 2019: “Each week, I have dozens of conversations with people who are trying to break into data science. The main topic of the conversations varies, but it’s rare that I walk away without getting a question like, “Do you think I have a shot in data science given my unusual background in [finance/physics/stats/economics/etc]?”. From now on, my answer to that question will be to point them to today’s guest, George John Jordan Thomas Aquinas Hayward.”

George is a full stack data scientist, an iOS engineer, an attorney, a comedian, and a minister, so no matter what your problem is, he can fix it or he’ll know someone who can. With God’s help, he taught himself to code, got promoted at Facebook within a year, coded in-production ML at a now-acquired startup, started his own consultancy, Hayward Data Science, and even trademarked and published a data science app in the Apple App Store (Sound Recipe).

Although SQL is his love language, he’s also accomplished in Python, Swift, R, and, of course, Excel. George’s mentored junior data scientists for years, as well as a whole host of other professionals too. George is a graduate of Harvard University (BA), Stanford University (JD/MBA), and Phillips Exeter Academy (High Honors). He’s worked at Google, Facebook, Morgan Stanley, and interned personally for then-Senator Barack Obama.
